Seedling to Stump and beyond .....

John grew up in Wood County Wisconsin, the youngest of four children. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his Dad and brother, and later in life with his nephews. Canada geese flying above, hills and valleys below, cranberry marshes here and there, all nestled around the Wisconsin River. He especially loved to see trees growing uninhibited in the open landscapes. With natural beauty all around him, he enjoyed hiking and skiing. John also played baseball, football, tennis, golf, and ran cross country. The University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, Wisconsin offered John many valuable learning experiences with some of the leading professors in the field, along with practical applications in rural Wisconsin. He planted pine seedlings and worked at a nursery for Nekoosa Papers, Inc. From there, the plains beckoned to him in Aberdeen, South Dakota where he was hired by the State to inventory the City's trees. He was especially happy to work with the children there in coordinating an Arbor planting program for the Public Schools of Aberdeen. John then ventured down to South Carolina where he completed a forestry study for the federal government. I was delighted to meet him at the Minnesota Arboretum.
